History workshops
Interactive workshops to support teaching NC History in KS1 & KS2
As a former museum learning officer, I understand the value of bringing history to life in the classroom and have years of experience of producing imaginative and interactive activities to encourage pupils to develop their skills of historical enquiry.
Sessions are tailored for individual year groups, to ensure they meet the requirements of particular key stages and subjects. See the range of workshops I can offer below. I can also create a bespoke workshop for you - contact me to discuss your requirements.
Anglo-Saxons (KS2)
Supports teaching about the Anglo-Saxons in NC History
Full day: 2 classes. Half day: 1 class.
An Anglo-Saxon grave has appeared in the classroom - pupils must use their critical thinking skills to examine it closely and try to identify the objects found with the skeleton so that they can build a character profile of the person buried. They'll learn how archaeology can explain the past before the skeleton is brought 'back to life' to explain Anglo-Saxon life and lifestyle. Conclude the session by choosing from a range of activities including: stories; object handling; braid weaving; writing with quills; runes and games; herbs and health; aerial photography and making clay pots (additional charge for clay).
World War One: Voices from the Great War (KS2)
Supports teaching about WWI in NC History
Full day: 2 classes. Half day: 1 class.
Hear the stories of real people who lived through WWI: from a soldier to a conscientious objector; a munitionette to a mother mourning the loss of her son. First person storytelling (using real witness accounts) immerses pupils in the lives of those who experience the war and encourages them to consider the impact war had on them - from the trenches to the home front.
Pupils have the opportunity to handle real artefacts including medals, trench wire, badges, objects, newspapers and photos.
Pupils will develop their learning by using the stories and artefacts as inspiration to plot their own story and they also have the opportunity to make a clay poppy (additional charge for clay).
World War Two: Bella's War (KS2)
Supports teaching about WWII in NC History
Full day: 2 classes. Half day: 1 class.
A postcard arrives from France with birthday greetings - Bella's husband, Tom, was one of the 1000's who went across in the days after D Day. Immersive, first person storytelling (drawn from real accounts) takes pupils into Bella's world as she recounts her life at home with her children and 2 evacuees, her work to support the war effort and her reflections on life before the war when she first met Tom. Pupils will trace Bella's life from childhood to the events of WWII. They'll also hear from Tom through the postcards he sends home.
Pupils have the opportunity to handle real artefacts including photos, postcards, newspapers and objects.
Pupils will develop their learning by using the stories and artefacts as inspiration to plot their own story and/or letter.
